About bubble & circled letters
Enclosed characters began as list furniture — a number already inside its circle, so a parts list or a set of instructions could be set in one pass of type. Japanese typesetting widened the idea: circled, squared and parenthesized letters and ideographs for forms, signage and packaging, and the emoji era finished the job.
The last group is the quiet mechanism of the set: the regional indicator letters do almost nothing alone, but any two together are read as a flag — the pair GB renders as the Union Jack in an emoji font. They are letters whose only job is to be combined, which makes them the strangest alphabet on this page.
