About chess symbols
Chess was one of the first games to get its own type: the white and black kings, queens, rooks, bishops, knights and pawns were encoded with the dingbats so scores and diagrams could be set in text.
The extended set adds the fairy-chess inventions — rotated and neutral pieces, the knight-compounds of chess problems — which most fonts omit. The twelve classic pieces are the ones that render almost everywhere.
