About currency symbols
Currency symbols are abbreviations that outgrew their letters: the dollar sign from the Spanish peso's 'ps', the pound from a Libra 'L', the yen and yuan from a Y with the strokes of a gate. Unicode encodes them as their own characters so amounts survive any font or language setting.
The set keeps growing with the world's money — the rupee (₹) was only encoded in 2010, designed by competition, and the bitcoin sign (₿) in 2017. The generic currency sign (¤) is the placeholder of the family, used where a specific symbol is unavailable.
Cryptocurrency, the subgroup at the end, is mostly borrowed clothing: only the bitcoin sign (₿) was encoded for its coin. The rest are older letters pressed into service — the Greek letter Xi for Ethereum, the Polish Ł for Litecoin, the Icelandic Eth for Dogecoin, and Mongolia's tugrik sign (₮) for Tether — each labeled here with the character it formally is.
