About sun symbols
The sun is usually drawn the way a child draws it: a circle with rays. Unicode's oldest sun is the alchemical and astrological symbol (☉), a circle with a center dot, joined by rayed, faced and weather-service suns.
Weather symbols are the everyday working set — the black sun with rays (☀) means clear skies on a forecast map. The circled dot (☉) also does duty in astronomy for the sun as a unit, as in solar masses.
