About peace symbols
The peace symbol (☮) was designed in 1958 for the British nuclear disarmament movement, combining the semaphore letters N and D inside the circle of the earth. It escaped its campaign within a decade and became the generic mark of peace worldwide.
Its partner here, the dove of peace (🕊), descends from the dove that returned to Noah's ark with an olive branch — a much older peace sign, carried into the emoji set with the branch still in its beak.
