About roman numerals

Roman numerals survive where numbering should feel ceremonial rather than counted: clock faces, regnal names, outlines and front matter. Unicode encodes the standard values both as capitals and as small letters.

Each numeral is a single character (Ⅻ is one codepoint, not X-I-I), which keeps sorting, searching and screen-reading honest. The clock-face forms are separate characters again — a reminder that even numerals have display variants.
