About fraction symbols

The vulgar fractions are survivors of metal type, when ½, ¼ and ¾ were single sorts in the case because recipes and prices used them daily. Unicode keeps the common set as single characters, plus the fraction slash (⁄) for building others.

A single-character fraction (½) and a typed one (1/2) are different text: the single character searches, wraps and reads aloud as 'one half', and stays the right choice wherever the denominator is in the encoded set.
