About check marks

The check mark is the universal sign for 'verified, selected, correct'. Unicode carries it in several weights — a light check, a heavy check, and boxed versions inherited from ballot papers, where a marked box meant a counted vote.

British English calls it a tick; American English a check. The ballot-box forms (☑) read as one unit — a box already marked — while the plain marks (✓ ✔) are meant to sit in a box, a margin, or a list of their own.
