About infinity symbols
The infinity symbol (∞) was introduced by the mathematician John Wallis in 1655 and may borrow its shape from the Roman numeral for a thousand or the Greek omega. It now stands for anything unbounded — mathematics first, then forever in the greeting-card sense.
Unicode also carries the specialized forms mathematics grew around it: incomplete and tie-shaped infinities used in order theory, and the paper-clip-like permanent paper sign used in archival printing to certify acid-free stock.
