About copyright symbols
The copyright symbol (©) dates from the early twentieth century as a shorthand for a full copyright notice; for most works it has been legally optional since 1989, but it remains the universal 'rights reserved' marker.
Its mirror image, the copyleft symbol (🄯), inverts both the letter and the idea: a work shared on condition that copies stay shared. The circled P (℗) is the sound-recording counterpart, marking rights in a recording rather than a composition.
